How are several ticked boxes submitted?
Each ticked checkbox sends its own name and value pair, so the backend sees the same name repeated. The form data parser shows how that looks after decoding.
Can I require at least one selection?
Not with HTML alone. Add a small script that checks the group before submit, and check it again on the server.
